Mrs. Sanicola's Second Grade Class

Mrs. Sanicola's second grade class created Monster Boxes for a lesson in descriptive writing. The lesson began with a brainstorming exercise where the students created a "Taxonomy of Monster Adjectives". As they read and discussed monster literature, the taxonomy words grew and more ideas were shared. The students then created their own original monsters and used descriptive words to accurately describe the monster in detail. Once the monster description was completed, each student worked with a partner in a lists to see if the partner could replicate the drawing by listening to the description of the monster. Once the drawing was complete, the partners would look to see if the new drawing resembled the original.

They then examined their writing to see if any words or directions could have been added, deleted, or changed to provide a better description. They also discovered the importance of listening for details and the relevance of using accurate and clear descriptions. As a culmination of the lesson, the students extended and project using MST skills.

By creating simple circuits, they could construct illuminated monsters! First, they were asked to make predictions that would explain how a simple circuit works (using a battery, two pieces of wire and a small bulb). Then they experimented with the materials until they were able to complete the simple circuit (the bulb illuminated). Afterwards, the predictions and results were compared and discussed. Once the light was placed inside the box, the monster illuminated and the monsters really came to life!

It has 10 teeth that are small and square. Its head is shaped like a medium sized circle and it has dandelion and brown hair that is 12 inches long and made out of yarn. My monster’s body is oval and it stands 60 feet tall. It moves by flying and walking. It has two tan rectangular arms and hands that help it to eat. It has three fingers which it uses to hold things. It also has four tan legs and feet that help it to walk. The most interesting fact about my monster is that it is really good at ballet dancing. It is special to me because she is very sweet. It is very silly because it is a two-headed monster. My monster has eight blue eyes that are shaped like a circle. Monster Family has no ears, nose or mouth. It has nine teeth that are small and square. Its head is one foot long and circular and it has no hair. My monster’s body is square shaped and it stands two feet tall. It moves by using its three legs. It has two green arms and hands that are shaped like a heart that help it move. It has claws which it uses to pinch. It also has three blue legs and feet that help it to walk. The most interesting fact about my monster is that it eats slimy worms. It is special to me because I have never seen a monster like it before and I like it. Can you guess what monster family looks like?
My Monster Named Chopper by Michael Let me introduce you to my monster. My monster’s name is Chopper because he chops down trees. It is a scary monster. My monster has two pink eyes that are shaped like a circle. It also has one red mouth that is shaped like a crescent moon. It has 13 teeth that are shaped like a triangle. Its head is five feet tall and circle shaped. My monster’s body is a half circle and it stands six feet and 7 inches tall. It moves by using its feet to run. Its arms and hands chop stuff. It has four fingers which it uses to eat. It also has two legs and feet that help it to run. The most interesting fact about my monster is that it chops up everything it sees. It also has eight stick legs and feet that help it to dig in the ground. The most interesting fact about my monster is that it is a flytrap that eats people, ants, and bugs. It has 10 peach color fingers which it uses to work and play. It also has two red rectangle legs and feet that help it to walk around the living room.
